Gaining Control of Your File Shares with SharePoint

Infrastructure Management
Participating Company:

For decades, the faithful file share has successfully provided a space for sharing documents and other data in organizations around the world. Conceived in the days of Novell Netware and Windows NT, file shares provided a quick and easy method of storing, securing, and accessing data, and have done that task quite well over the years.

As data volumes increased, some of the scalability and functionality limitations of file shares became more evident as organizations needed basic document management functionality such as versioning, multi-authoring, and full-text search. These functions were missing from most file share platforms and were instead only offered through the use of additional external applications. Many of these applications were cumbersome to use and often didn’t integrate well with client tools such as Microsoft Office, so many organizations simply stayed with their file shares or maintained two separate systems.
